Aïta Mon Amour, the duo formed by Moroccan rap pioneer Widad Mjama and Tunisian alternative music composer and musician Khalil EPI, officially debuted in mid-2023. However, they have already managed to captivate audiences with their electrifying, Dionysian live performances! Their stage presence and musical expression overflow with energy, reminiscent of the great North African activist, songwriter, and performer Rachid Taha, whose career unfolded within the bounds of an adventurous life.
In the case of Aïta Mon Amour, the foundation is not Rai but Aïta, a musical tradition originating from the Chikhates, female singers who were guardians of a centuries-old practice that flourished among Bedouin communities, particularly in the Moroccan region along the Atlantic coast. Aïta is characterized by a heavy, often lamenting blues style that, at times, evokes mysticism and at others, deep expressiveness, giving voice to the poetry, concerns, and aspirations of these communities. Interestingly, the word Aïta itself means “scream” or “call,” initially associated with summoning warriors but evolving into a rich musical expression with recognizable features and a unique aesthetic, providing a platform for female singers to leave their mark.
Rhythm and lyrics are fundamental elements in Aïta, yet equally important is the inner resonance achieved through synchronized repetitive patterns and the electrifying nature of the music. Traditionally, Aïta musicians used percussion, the loutar (a type of lute), and violin. However, Widad Mjama and Khalil EPI bring their contemporary personal touch to the stage. Widad showcases her remarkable ability to rap lyrics, play percussion (in certain segments), and connect with the audience, while Khalil handles the loutar and crafts electronic soundscapes to enrich the performance.
Their musical journey recently reached a milestone. At the end of January, Aïta Mon Amour released their first full-length album, Abda, following a series of singles tested during their powerful live shows, which garnered an enthusiastic audience response.
Widad Mjama speaks about all this in an interview with folkradio.gr…
