The Musical Tradition of Corfu

By Sotiris Bekas

Corfu exerts a charm that is hard to ignore. It is a place of multi-layered beauty and even richer history. One of the elements that makes it so alluring is its historical and cultural ties with Venice and its cultural heritage. The influence of the Venetians is evident and profound—especially in the city of Corfu—in areas such as architecture, the urban fabric, gastronomy, small daily habits, and, of course, local music.

The cantades (serenades), choral groups, and the musical character of Corfu have been enriched by Venetian culture, without excluding older musical references, creating a beautiful blend of musical joy with various layers depending on where one is on the island.

Mr. Michalis Grammenos, a researcher, musician, performer, and Corfiot himself, analyzed this musical diversity and the gradual formation of Corfu’s musical tradition on folkradio.gr, highlighting the cultural and historical influences that shaped it. He also referred to its key representatives and those who continue this tradition today.

Special mention is made of the legendary musician and singer Thanasis Spinoulas, as well as other bands and musicians from different parts of the island, who—apart from the well-known urban cantades—continue to perform the folk music of the Corfiot countryside to this day.

One of the musicians of the modern generation and a student of Thanasis Spinoulas, Thodoris Karydis, shares his experience alongside his great teacher on folkradio.gr and offers violin performances of two local melodies, Spartiliotiko (from Northern Corfu) and Siniotiko.
